Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and acid salts that form in the kidneys and may become very painful when passed into the thin tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder (called ureters). They usually do not cause permanent damage when promptly diagnosed and treated. Many kidney stones will be passed without the need for surgery. However, stones that are too large to pass, become infected, or are causing ongoing, severe pain, may require surgery. Stone procedures are almost invariably performed in a minimally invasive manner, using scopes and lasers passed through normal body passages or with shockwaves delivered external to the body. All of the latest and most sophisticated technologies for the treatment of kidney stones are available through Urology Specialists of Wisconsin. In addition, we are able to perform a metabolic evaluation in recurrent stone formers that allows us to make recommendations for strategies to prevent kidney stones. Because each patient with a kidney stone is unique, we adapt our evaluation, treatment, and preventative strategies to meet the needs of each individual.
